William Downie, Camp Hill, Victoria, Australia
Produced by winemaker, William Downie. In 2006 William was fortunate to buy a farm and plant a vineyard in Gippsland, just 20 minutes from where he grew up. The land is north facing, surprisingly the opposite of the usual hot Aussie weather, as the climate here is cool with high rainfall. You can even spot a ski resort in the distance! William farms with regenerative agriculture in mind, which means no cultivation, no synthetic chemicals or fertilisers.
Camp Hill is an elegant, single vineyard Pinot Noir. The vines are grown on rocky red volcanic soils, sitting northwest farm at the highest point of the farm (250m altitude) between the Strzelecki and Great Dividing Range. Grapes are hand harvested, de-stemmed and softly pressed. Fermented with natural yeasts in a mix of wooden and stainless steel open fermenters. Aged on the lees for ten months, bottled unfined and unfiltered.
This Pinot Noir is beautifully balanced, slightly herbal with cherry stones and red currants.
