Weingut Sepp Muster, Opok, Steirerland, Austria
"To fundamentally change things, you must see the world through different eyes." Maria and Sepp Muster farm 10 hectares of vines in Styria, southern Austria, biodynamically, in tune with nature. Their wines are precise, elegant and fabulous.
Opok is the local name for the soil the vines grow in, a blue and rocky clay and silt that lies above chalky marl subsoil. This is what everything stems from in the Muster world.
The Muster's vineyard work has been an inspiration to many, and the minimal intervention winemaking methods they adopted in the 1990s, and have been developing ever since, broke away from the overtly (excessively?) technical methods prevalent at the time. They are makers of Styria's "most delicate and nuanced" wines according to Simon J Woolf (The Morning Claret).
This wine is a belter that ticks all the boxes; biodynamic, organic, vegan and sulphate free and delicious with fresh, clean minerals.
