Valdibella, Agape, Nerello Mascalese, Sicily
If we're slightly obsessed with Sicily, you'll have to forgive us. This latest arrival from the very wonderful Valdibella cooperative is only feeding our obsession.
Àgape, a word which roughly translates as brotherly or self-sacrificing, unconditional love, is made from Nerello Mascalese, one of those grapes that you almost never see outside its homeland and often wonder why. Quite pale in colour it has a bouquet of red fruits, cherries and touches of spice that bounces out of the glass and a palate that is juicy, light and fresh with flavours of sour cherry and berries. Perfect with a melanzane parmigiana perhaps or a banging pizza.
While the Valdibella coop's main focus is on wine they embrace polyculture, partly to enhance biodiversity in their environment, and produce food - pasta, flour, almonds, oil and vegetables- with produce from their members.
