White Wine

Baglio Gibellina, Grillo, Sicily, Italy

When we think of Sicily and white wine, we instantly think of Grillo, the islands most famous white varietal, a perfumed richness and hint of spice sings of Sicily and all its goodness.

Baglio Gibellina's vineyards are surrounded by the hills of Salemi and Santa Ninfa. Old vineyards located between 300-600m above sea level are grown on a mixture of clay and volcanic soils. The grapes are hand harvested at the end of August before fermentation occurs in small, temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. This wine is robust and great with food from fish dishes such as tuna or swordfish or spicy, meaty dishes.

Produttori di Manduria, Zin, IGT Puglia, Italy-

Produttori di Manduria is a cooperative winery founded in 1932 but while it is historic it's also very forward thinking, a shining light on how coops can be run for the benefit of everyone - its members, its customers and in this case the planet, farming beyond organic and using sustainable processes throughout the vineyards and winery.

Orange Wine

Cantine Rallo, Vicoletto, Sicily, Italy

The Vesco family at Cantine Rallo really know what they're doing when it comes to making authentic wines that reflect the terroir but don't cost the earth (in either sense).

We are now into double figures with this producer's wines - we're big fans - and when they announced an everyday priced orange we couldn't wait to taste it!

Vicoletto is made from Catarratto grapes grown in sandy soils high up in the Alcamo hills, where the altitude tempers the impact of the summer sun and mountain breezes cool the vines. The grapes ripen slowly over the summer and are hand harvested in the cool of the morning in early autumn then taken down to the winery in Marsala where they are gently pressed.

90% of the crop is fermented in a stainless steel tank without skins, just free run and pressed juice. The other 10% ferments on skins for 12 days, the "orange" portion. The two portions are then blended and bottled without filtering, fining or any added sulphur.

Aromas and flavours of Sicilian citrus, grapefruit, white nectarine and mediterranean herbs. The texture is rich and round. A beautiful introduction to orange / skin contact white wines and delicious with seafood, anchovies or stuffed Sicilian sardines for example, or perhaps a ricotta filled pasta.

Pink Wine

Produttori di Manduria, Aka Primitivo Rosato, IGT Puglia, Italy

We couldn't help ourselves but choose another wine from Manduria's longstanding cooperative for an expression of Primitivo you might not have seen.

Another depiction of sea stuff on the label (coral in this case), representing their proximity and influence from the mediterranean, aka uses Puglia's native and signature grape, Primitvo. This rosé is deep coral pink in colour. Full of red fruit flavours - ripe cherries, pomegranate, red apple, wild strawberries and raspberries as well as a touch of salinity. This juicy rosé pairs fantastically with spicy food but equally on its own, makes a beautifully refreshing drink on a Spring day.

Red Wine

Cantina di Venosa, Vignali, Basilicata Rosso, Italy -

We love indigenous grapes and we love wines from volcanic soils - they seem to have a verve and life that's a bit special. In this case the grape is Aglianico and the volcanic soils in Basilicata in the south of Italy, a slightly forgotten land of mountains, fields and beautiful landscapes. Cantina Venosa is a cooperative winery with around 400 members who between them own around 800 hectares, from which they produce a range of wines including whites and the flagship Aglianico del Vulture. This wine is one of the classic range which expresses the typical regional style, deliciously drinkable with flavors of dark cherry and spice. Great with full flavored pasta or risotto and with roast meats and mature cheese.

Tenute Dettori, Renosu Rosso NV, Sardegna, Italy -

Tucked up in the hilly North Western tip of Sardinia, Tenute Dettori have been pioneering the craft of authentic, natural, terroir-expressive wines on the island since the early 1900s. The Dettoris farm their land comprising of vines, grain and vegetables using biodynamic practices yet without strict dates to determine certain jobs. Their decades of experience allow them to be in tune with the earth and react accordingly with the what each year brings claiming that 'each year is a new adventure and should be faced with a light touch, freedom of movement and freedom of conditioning.'  The vines are tended to by hand and the perfect time of harvest is determined by walking through the vineyards and chewing grapes.

Alessandro Dettori is the latest generation of winemakers and his Renosu Rosso is a non vintage blend of equal amounts of their indigenous red varieties, Cannonau, Monica and Pascale. He makes wines with only grapes, without any additions of synthetic chemicals apart from a little sulphur. Fermentation occurs spontaneously after two days maceration in concrete vats before three months aging also in concrete. The nose brings bags of red fruit with some spice and mediterranean scrub, savoury and mineral on the palate. Best enjoyed a little chilled and with a little patience to rest in the glass.
