Alvaro Castro, Vinho Branco, Dão, Portugal -

Quinta de Pellada had been in the Castro family since the 16th century however it wasn’t until 1980 when Alvaro Castro, a civil engineer, returned to the Quinta and picked up where his family had stopped a few generations before. Now Alvaro Castro is recognised as one of the leading winemakers in the Dao region and along with his daughter Maria they bring us some stunning wines. Dao Vihno Branco is a well balanced white with fresh citrus and mineral flavours and an elegant finish.

At Roselia Molina, inland of Valencia and at 1,100 metres above sea level the vineyards and winery are treated as naturally as possible with only the minimal of intervention.

This orange wine from Altolandon has undergone a manual harvest, grapes collected in 12kg cases to protect them from crushing followed by spontaneous fermentation on skins in 1000 litre amphora with no oak treatment. The results are a very pale orange pink colour with stone fruit, anise and mineral notes.

Chateau Clement Termes, Petits Clements, Merlot Duras, South West, France - Château Clément Termes has been producing wines in the Gaillac region of south west France for over   150 years. Caroline and Olivier David are the seventh generation to run the domaine. On the right bank of the river Tarn, between Albi and Toulouse, the vineyards lie on the edge of the Gaillac plateau. Using traditional, local grape varieties such as Braucol and, in this case Duras, as well as more well known international varieties, they make wines which are brightly ripe and fruity but retain aromatic freshness. This wine is lovely to drink now, one for enjoying with some richer white meat, pork or chicken, or with some turkey or goose.

Agricola Gaia, Brich, Barbera Monferrato, Piemonte, Italy -  Barbera can be found growing throughout Piedmont, and it's often what the locals choose to drink. And if in doubt, follow the locals…

But there are a few areas that really specialise in Barbera, one of which is Monferrato, where the cool of the rolling hills helps create the perfect climate to get the best out of the grape. The name “Brich” is derived from bricco, the Piedmont dialect word for hill top or crag, and this wine is made from 30 year old vines, growing high on the hillside, which have been in Fabrizio Luli’s family for generations.

70% of the grapes are destemmed, 30% left whole bunch, with a 12 hour cold maceration to extract juice and colour, before a natural fermentation occurs. The wine is aged for 9 months in concrete. Bottled without being fined or filtered and with just a smidge of SO2.

Aromas of dark, ripe blackberry flavours and summer pudding, generous and round, but with a lovely edge, a characteristic of Barbera, that balances the fruit and keeps it fresh.

Drink it with pasta with a meaty sauce, some salumi or cheese and it is perfect with pizza!
