Northern Italy is a region close to our hearts. For the wine, the food, the scenery, the cities, the vibe...

This mixed case conjures up those memories with six wines that explore an incredible variety on offer, some big names alongside the lesser known.

Sparkling

Sorelle Bronca, Modi, Prosecco Treviso Brut, Veneto, Italy -

rsiliana and Antonella Bronca inherited some old vineyards in the 1980’s but that isn’t how you make interesting wines, you make interesting wines by inheriting a deep passion and that is what the Bronca sisters inherited from their father Livio, ‘an aspiration to transform this deep family feeling into a life project’.
Since then the Bronca sisters have more vineyards in Valdobbiadene, Veneto, the home and heart of Prosecco, here they have brought that passion and a true understanding of organic and combined it with modern techniques. Modi is an organically grown, estate-bottled Prosecco that is vivacious and elegant, with a very fine, lively perlage. Fresh and dry, with plenty of typicity, this is the perfect aperitif.

White wines

Ca'Lojera, Lugana DOC 2024, Lombardy, Italy -

Found on the southern shores of Lake Garda, Ca'Lojera estate features a 14th century palazzo, formerly a summer home of Veronese bishops but legend has it that it was overrun by wolves using it as their lair to protect Lake Garda's pirates. This legend is where the estate got their name, which in the Lombardian dialect means 'house of the wolves'.

Ambra and Franco farm 18 hectares of vines influenced by the microclimate of the lake, mostly dedicated to local grape, Turbiana (Trebbiano di Lugana) which is most similar to Verdicchio from Marche. Yet this wine is more similar in style to a Soave but with more heft and body. It's expressive with bags of minerality, great acidity and notes of green apple and lemon pith. Worth trying with lake fish, like trout or eel!

Stocco, Malvasia IGT Trevenezie, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy -

East of Venice, towards Slovenia lies the region of Friuli Grave, a land between the Carnic Mountains and the sea, the Gulf of Trieste, with deep alluvial soils, a climate well suited to viticulture and a wealth of indigenous grape varieties. The Stocco family have been farming and making wine here for at least four generations, focusing on the local varieties but also working with some international grapes.

This Malvasia is straw yellow in colour, dry with hints of exotic fruits and spice. Perfect with soups or seafood but equally well enjoyed on its own.

Red wines

Cascina Zerbetta, Barbera del Monferrato, Piedmont, Italy -

Paolo Malfatti has four hectares of vines and hazlenut groves in Monferrato, Piedmont. This Barberra is everything we love about northern Italian reds, a deep and dark with notes of ripe cherries and currants and a delicious mineral-rich body. Great with lasagne.

Low Sulphates

Latium Morini, 'Campo dei Ciliegi' Valpolicella Ripasso, Veneto, Italy -

Latium Morini is an extended family producer - seven brother, sisters, uncles, aunts etc who own vineyards in the Veneto regions of Soave and Valpolicella, north of Verona in North East Italy. They used to take their grapes to the local cooperative wineries but around ten years ago decided to build their own winery, partly spurred on by seeing what their famous neighbours were doing. They have never looked back and get great reviews for their wines. Jancis Robinson rates their Amarone as being in the top five produced. Ripasso uses the “solids” from fermenting Amarone to give extra body, weight and texture to regular Valpolicella. As a result it takes on some of the character of Amarone - big fruit, dark, intense and pretty substantial. Fantastic with mature cheeses, long slow cooked meats or intensely flavoured vegetable dishes. The wine is good to drink now but will mature happily for several years or more.
