Stonebird, Teku Teku, UK
The name Stonebird refers to the Hoopoe bird which winemaker Gavin Patterson grew up watching in the vineyards of Zimbabwe and South Africa where he grew up and first started making wine. The first few vintages of Stonebird were made in South Africa, mainly with fruit from Hemel en Aarde. The currents of life however brought him to England and to Shropshire where he works as winemaker for a local producer. Gavin is carrying on with his Stonebird side-hustle however, using grapes he sources from trusted growers in England.
Teku Teku is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown in Kent and made in one of Gavin's clay amphora. Delicately pink, and delicately fruity, it is a lovely expression of English wine, perfect as an aperitif, ideally on a bright summers day - but you could always just open a bottle and pretend it is, if it isn't, to brighten it up!
