East of Venice, towards Slovenia lies the region of Friuli Grave, a land between the Carnic Mountains and the sea, the Gulf of Trieste, with deep alluvial soils, a climate well suited to viticulture and a wealth of indigenous grape varieties. The Stocco family have been farming and making wine here for at least four generations, focusing on the local varieties but also working with some international grapes.
Ribolla Gialla is one of Friuli's indigenous white grape varieties and ripens late in the season, around the end of September. The wine is straw yellow in colour with fruity and floral notes which recall acacia blossoms and wild flowers. On the palate it feels quite rich but finishes softly dry with a fresh acidity. Lovely with a creamy risotto or pasta.
