East of Venice, towards Slovenia lies the region of Friuli Grave, a land between the Carnic Mountains and the sea, the Gulf of Trieste, with deep alluvial soils, a climate well suited to viticulture and a wealth of indigenous grape varieties. The Stocco family have been farming and making wine here for at least four generations, focusing on the local varieties but also working with some international grapes. 

Refosco (or Refosco dal Penducolo Rosso to give it its full title, which refers to the red colour of the stalk) is unique to the region. It gives wines which are violet red in colour, have aromas of wild blackberry and woodland undergrowth, and a dry, smooth palate with a characteristic touch of bitterness that makes it ideal to drink with food. Try it with some salumi or an earthy risotto of mushrooms, or a truffle pasta.
