Rosi, "Riflessi Rosi" Vallagarina IGT, Trentino Alto Adige, Italy
Eugenio Rosi is a true artisan and a trail blazer in the natural wine movement of Trentino. After working as enologist for several local wineries and cooperatives, Eugenio stepped away to start his own project in 1997 with the help and belief from his family. He now owns 5.5 hectares of rural mountainous vines between 200 to 600 metres above sea level in Vallagarina, just south of Trento.
A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of the late ripening, indigenous Trentino grape called Marzemino which is rarely seen grown outside outside of this region, but regularly heard in Mozart's 'Don Giovanni' as the hero sings "Versa il vino! Eccelente Marzemino" which translates to "Pour the wine up! Excellent Marzemino!"
The grapes have a short maceration of two days before being passed over the white grape skins used for Rosi's 'Anisos' in order to reabsorb some colour and astringency through the tannins of the white grapes' skins. This is followed by at least 8 months of ageing in concrete vats.
The Riflesso Rosi is somewhere between a rosé and a light red, but regardless of labels, this is our kind of summer drinking! Disturbingly refreshing, full of crunchy forest fruits and mouth-watering acidity.
