Rosi, "Anisos" Vallagarina IGT, Trentino Alto Adige, Italy
Eugenio Rosi is a true artisan and a trail blazer in the natural wine movement of Trentino. After working as enologist for several local wineries and cooperatives, Eugenio stepped away to start his own project in 1997 with the help and belief from his family. He now owns 5.5 hectares of vines between 200 to 600 metres above sea level in Vallagarina, just south of Trento.
'Anisos' translates as different and refers to Rosi being one of the first to make a skin contact wine with the native Trentino variety, Nosiola. His intention is for it to be all Nosiola but for now it is blended with a touch of Pinot Bianco and Chardonnay. Each grape variety has three different harvests according to their ripeness. Fermentation lasts for 20 days on the skins without the grapes being crushed in big open barrels.
This is a beautiful, approachable orange with enough flesh and richness in the mid palate to balance the texture from the skin contact. Anisos boasts bags of complexity on the nose with notes of peaches, saffron and vanilla leading the way followed by a cloud of light smoke, pineapple and plums as well as butter, honey and dried flowers. Pleasantly fresh and persistent.
