Milan Nestarec, WTF, Moravia, Czech Republic
Milan Nestarec is a name that has shaken the wine industry to it's knees, those natty wine enthusiasts seek Him out, even having a dividing dating system, there were those wines BN (before Nestarec) and those AN (after).
He is a humble wine maker and claims to be normal - 'Not using herbicides & other industrial treatments? Normal. No fooling around in the cellar? Normal. Not adding sulfur? Normal.', in reality this isn't normal and the wine industry needs to find these game changers and take notice. All Hail Nestarec!
This wine was born in a garage, apparently that's where all good things come from. Back in the day Milan Nesarec had a patchwork of vineyards and every space was used which led to a barrel of Gruner Veltliner raging in a barrel in a stinking hot garage.. So the wine started to evaporate and a meaty flor developed on the exposed surface. It was then stopped and topped up but it was the start of something..
Nowadays barrels aren't stored in the garage but we still want that nutty goodness. When the new wine is ready to be barrelled a bit of the previous vintage is kept in there allowing the old and new vintages to mingle. This wine is adventurous and surprising, much like waiting a year to find out if the mingling worked or went astray.
What The Flor.. Gruner Veltliner and a touch of Reisling , half is skin macerated and the other half is direct press before being blended together in an Acacia barrel with some of the previous years, no fining, no filtering and no added sulphates
