Milan Nestarec, Forks and Knives , Moravia, Czech Republic
Milan Nestarec is a name that has shaken the wine industry up. Those natty wine enthusiasts seek him out, even having a dividing dating system: there were those wines BN (before Nestarec) and those AN (after).
He is a humble wine maker and claims to be normal - 'Not using herbicides & other industrial treatments? Normal. No fooling around in the cellar? Normal. Not adding sulfur? Normal.', in reality this isn't normal and the wine industry needs to find these game changers and take notice.
Nestarec explains the story behind this wine best...'The role that wine used to play in my country always pissed me off: not an essential part of almost any meal like elsewhere, but rather a binge drink afterwards / a treat for special occasions. For me & my family, wine is like food, something that should be on your table every day. Our bread and butter (literally).
This is the kind of wine I wanna make: affordable, everyday, friendly stuff. Not something for the upper class, not something you need to swirl your glass and head around, talking about viscosity or minerality for ages (no offence, but jeez do I hate this word). My wine is for drinking, not for flashing posh terms. And the Forks & Knives range is a perfect embodiment of this.'
This pale red is a blend of grapes, part carbonic fermentation, aged in stainless steel and big neutral barrels before being bottled under crown caps, no added sulphur, no fining and no filtration.. Just pure deliciousness and only 10%abv. Drink lightly chilled.
