Merayo, Godello, Bierzo, Spain
Another of Spain’s great, unknown grape varieties, Godello is native to Bierzo, a region directly north of Portugal. With less influence from the Atlantic, the climate is a bit warmer than neighbouring areas of Galicia making it more suitable for growing red grapes or, as in this case, bigger, rounder whites. The Merayo family has been growing grapes in the region for generations but it is Pedro who has really taken things to the next level and, with the help of winemaker Fermin Uria, started producing outstanding wines.
This is a wine made for drinking with fish. With aromas of green apple, citrus and a touch of fennel, it has a lovely full palate but with refreshing acidity. Drink within a couple of years of vintage though no doubt it would mature interestingly too.
