Latium Morini, Amarone della Valpolicella ‘Campo Leòn’, Veneto, Italy
Latium Morini is an extended family producer - seven brother, sisters, uncles, aunts etc who own vineyards in the Veneto regions of Soave and Valpolicella, north of Verona in North East Italy. They used to take their grapes to the local cooperative wineries but around ten years ago decided to build their own winery, partly spurred on by seeing what their famous neighbours were doing. They have never looked back.
The making process involves air drying grapes for 100-120 days in small baskets. Followed by a controlled fermentation and then barrel aged for 30 months followed by 8 to 10 months in bottle. It'll lure you in with its deep red and orange hue colour, intense ripe black fruit and sour cherries. Herbaceous and earthy, it'll go great with gamey meats and ripe cheeses. Beautifully balanced and rich!
