On a list of the most challenging environments to grow wine the island of Lanzarote has to be up there as one of the most extreme. Yet the results can be truly extraordinary and delicious.
Traditional grape varieties, the vines trained in a unique manner in deep dips in the ground with low protecting walls, varying soil types from volcanic to marine sedimentary, and a very special dry but quite temperate climate lead to wines that have a wonderful tension and clarity, especially in the hands of a talented winemaker like Carmelo Peña Santana.
Founded in 2022 but using vines between 50 and 200 years old, all ungrafted, growing on their own rootstocks, Jable de Tao is an exciting new project from Carmelo, who also makes wine on Gran Canaria.
Our first wine from Carmelo, Jable de Tao, is a white blend of local grapes growing in a range of soils on sites across the island. It is a beautiful introduction to premium Lanzarote wines, capturing the unique landscape and climate of this wonderful island.
Perfect served with seafood or Lanzarote papas arrugadas (“wrinkled” potatoes cooked in salt water).
