Johan Meyer is making a name for himself not just in the South African wine world but internationally. He is behind the successful Mother Rock range which we love but also puts his name on his signature Chardonnay and Pinot Noir made from fruit grown in cool, coastal Elgin. He fell in love with making Chard and Pinot working in Santa Barbara, California and recognised the potential for them back home in South Africa.

These Chardonnay grapes are grown in Elgin at altitudes of between 500 and 700 where it is a bit cooler and bit damper than inland with lower night time temperatures and more rainfall.

Grapes are hand harvested in the cool morning then split into thirds. Each third is whole bunch fermented in various 500 litre old oak French barrels, but some is left on the skins for 8 days, and some allowed a touch of oxidation to add complexity and toasty notes. Each parcel is then aged for 10 months before being blended. The result is a layered, medium bodied Chardonnay with tones of minerality, citrus, acidity and balanced oak.
