Gonzalo Grijalba, Gran Cerdo Tinto, Rioja, Spain
Gonzalo Gonzalo is considered quite a character and certainly determined. He had an idea to make low interference wine in Rioja (revolutionary for the area) and set off to numerous banks where he was refused loans as wine was not considered a ‘impoundable assets’. His determination and drive led him to friends and family and luckily he was able to turn his ideas to reality. As a little nod to the many bankers who refused his dreams, we have Gran Cerdo, literally ‘big pigs’ in English.
This is as natural as you can get and Gonzalo has delivered a Tempranillo that is juicy and rich (did you hear that bankers)? Whole bunch fermentation with no filtration or fining and minimal sulphur.
