Franco Rocca, "Albesani" Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy
Franco Rocca and his wife Susan have 4.5 hectares of vines in the rolling hills of Neive in Piedmont where they focus on the typical red varieties of the Langhe; Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo. They do so with great care and patience, aiming to achieve the highest quality grapes over high yields. This results in smaller productions per cuvée, but ones worth waiting for. These are wines to be savoured and appreciated.
The Albesani is Franco's self proclaimed favourite, with an alluring complexity that continues to open up in the glass. This single vineyard Nebbiolo brings a heady and intense nose with notes of liquorice, leather, spices and fresh herbs with subtle notes of tar. The palate adds balsamic into the mix as well as elements of dried fruit and autumn berries. The tannins have been mellowed over the years but remain structured and balanced. Fantastic drunk now, but this well improve with time.
