Tiago Sampaio farms in the Douro Valley however he's doing everything a little bit differently. Rather than farming near the river he is growing at high altitude which helps slow down ripening, increase complexity and maintain freshness in the wines. Another differing factor is the soil type, his vines are growing in a shist / clay / granite mix in contrast to the more usual shist / slate soils elsewhere.

This Alvarinho is taken from 8 different sites within a 5km radius, all between 550 - 700 metres above sea level. Across the plots is a combination of young and old vines which bring a perfect balance of complexity and vibrancy. The grapes are whole bunch pressed in stainless steel where fermentation kicks off. It is left on its full lees for 6 months before bottling where it is unfined and unfiltered with only a tiny addition of sulphur.

Precise and minerally with plenty of lime zest and stone fruit. Great with seafood.
