Sparkling Wine

Bodegas Sumarroca, Cava Brut Reserva, Catalunya, Spain -

Cava was the go-to sparkling alternative before Prosecco came along and stole the thunder. The 80's, those were the good old days!! But Cava is back and better than ever, at least in the case of wines from Bodegas Sumarroca and others who have refocused on quality over quantity. All Cava is made using the traditional method, as used in Champagne, the time in bottle on lees adding complexity and depth of flavour.

This wine from Carlos and Nuria Sumarocca is an elegant, balanced wine, work in the vineyards drawing on Carlos’ extensive viticultural experience. Dry but with lovely fruit it is the perfect aperitif, ideal for sharing with friends, and great to drink with rice, salads and seafood and any asparagus dish.

Orange Wine

Cantine Rallo, Vicoletto, Catarratto, Sicily, Italy -

The Vesco family at Cantine Rallo really know what they're doing when it comes to making authentic wines that reflect the terroir but don't cost the earth (in either sense).

We are now into double figures with this producer's wines - we're big fans - and when they announced an everyday priced orange we couldn't wait to taste it!

Vicoletto is made from Catarratto grapes grown in sandy soils high up in the Alcamo hills, where the altitude tempers the impact of the summer sun and mountain breezes cool the vines. The grapes ripen slowly over the summer and are hand harvested in the cool of the morning in early autumn then taken down to the winery in Marsala where they are gently pressed.

90% of the crop is fermented in a stainless steel tank without skins, just free run and pressed juice. The other 10% ferments on skins for 12 days, the "orange" portion. The two portions are then blended and bottled without filtering, fining or any added sulphur.

Aromas and flavours of Sicilian citrus, grapefruit, white nectarine and mediterranean herbs. The texture is rich and round. A beautiful introduction to orange / skin contact white wines and delicious with seafood, anchovies or stuffed Sicilian sardines for example, or perhaps a ricotta filled pasta.

Still remarkably good value their wines have all the lovely Rhône character you could hope for - warm, welcoming fruit, a touch of spice - with a lightness of touch that makes them super drinkable. Bodegas Alfredo Maestro, Vinã Almate, Castilla y Leon, Spain  -

The name Almate is an amalgamation of his own name and the grapes used, ALfredo MAestro TEmpranillo, clever isn’t it? Alfredo, also known as Spains “natural wine rockstar”, began making wines with the help of books but he had a revelation in 2000 and questioned why farm organic when so much is added in the winery and so changed his methods and abandoned the Ribeiro de Duero DO in favour of completely organic winemaking. 30% of the grapes are fermented in whole clusters using wild, native yeasts before all the wine is matured in used French oak. Almate is a rich and juicy red with plums, big red berries and toffee flavours balanced to perfection
