Sparkling Wine

Hure Freres, Invitation Brut, Champagne, France -

Champagne is often associated with big brands and flash money. Huré-Frères is the antidote to that. A family business, started by Raoul Huré just 50 years ago, and continued today by his sons Francois and Pierre, everything they do today is intended to express the patchwork of vineyards and terroirs of the Montagne de Reims, their part of the Champagne region.

These wines are for celebrations and sharing but they are also gastronomic wines that pair fantastically with food. The invitation is as the name suggests an introductory Champagne to the brother's style and range, classy, biscuity, toasty Champagne to be enjoyed by all!

Andreas Bender, Dajoar Zenit Riesling 2022, Mosel, Germany -

Andreas Bender's wines are a constant at Iron & Rose. "Dajoar" has been a go to Riesling for so many Riesling fans for a number of years - and made many Riesling converts.

Andreas was only 13 years old when he made his first wine, learning about viticulture, soil and terroir from his father who was a vine propagator. From then on he knew he was destined to be a wine maker. He studied and then hit the road, working at wineries in Germany, France Italy and the US before he settled back home in 2008 to start his own project on his family vineyards.

Andreas' philosophy is unusual in that he doesn't commercialise his top single vineyards separately. This doesn't mean he's not a traditionalist though and actually vinifies grapes from each individual vineyard site separately every year, resulting in a multitude of different cuvées which are later blended to make the best of each vintage into a number of different wines. He believes careful cellar work, simple techniques and natural fermentation are key.

Andreas' own vineyards are farmed organically and he also works with trusted growers who farm to his specifications.

In the dialect of the Mosel, the word ‘Dajoar’ means “as the olden days”. It is the term chosen by Andreas to describe this style of Riesling, made as an homage to the Mosel wines of the past: off-dry with a playful sweetness that balances out the crisp acidity.

Whilst Andreas makes most of his wines from across his vineyards, his 'Zenit' labels are sourced from single plots only in exceptional year, signifying for Andreas the best the Mosel has to offer.

La Soufrandière, Saint-Véran, Climat "La Bonnode", Burgundy, France -

Brothers, Jean Philippe and Jean Guillaume Bret removed their family vineyard in the Macon from the local co-op in 2000, in order to establish Domaine de la Soufrandière. They have since converted to organic and biodynamic farming across their sights and are now making some of the most exciting wines in the Mâconnais.

'La Bonnode' is a 2 hectare plot in Saint-Vèran on a gentle slope overlooking the Sâone valley often with views as far as Mont Blanc to the east.

The Bret Brothers 'cuvee zen' is aged for 17 months between old oak barrels and vats. They're unfined, unfiltered and made with out sulphur until just a small addition at bottling. The wine is energetic and complex with a waxy, floral nose and apricots and citrus on the palate.

Red Wine

Aux Plantes, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2019, Bordeaux, France -

Growing up in Libourne, it was inevitable that wine maker Olivier was to fall in love with the world of wine, but it’s his revolutionary approach to winemaking and desire to break the rules that sets him apart.

A percentage of his wine has been aged in clay amphora, softening the tannins and flavour. The remaining wine is aged in casks and barrels, 30% of which are new oak. Like Olivier, it's expressive! Deep rich red and black fruit aromas, with a spicy undertone. Elegantly full bodied! Believe when we say this is great as an aperitif, pairing nicely with grazing snacks! Think delicious plates of cured ham and Catalonian olives.

Remelluri, Remelluri Reserva 2016, Rioja, Spain  -

Remelluri is one of Rioja's iconic producers. Now run by Telmo Rodriguez, Rioja's greatest ambassador and one of Spain's greatest winemakers, the bodega's vineyards all lie together in one space in Rioja Alavesa, tucked up against the Sierra Cantabria. Traditionally they also bought grapes from two neighbouring villages, Labastida and San Vicente, and these were used in the main blend but now these grapes are made into separate blends.

This wine is the flagship of the Remelluri estate, made mainly from Tempranillo, with smaller portions of Garnacha, Graciano, Viura and Malvasía. It is aged for 17 months in barrel and released after a minimum of three years in the cellar. The result is rich and savoury, with dense colour, an attractive nose of earthy red fruit, and fine-grained tannins.
