Wine of the week! Viña Zorzal Chardonnay, Navarra, Spain

Wine of the week time! This week we’re going for something very affordable as you blew your budget on diamonds on Valentine’s, and a white as the weather is warming up and the sun is coming out. It’s Viña Zorzal Chardonnay from Navarra in northen Spain.

Viña Zorzal is a project run by three brothers farming vineyards in Navarra, the region directly east of Rioja in Northern Spain. With a continental climate, higher diurnal temperature changes between day and night, and less rainfall than Rioja it produces some elegant but gutsy and typically Spanish wines.

The family are very respectful of the environment. For example they do not plough the vineyards, use selected local plants as ground cover crops, and use natural fermentations.

This wine is made from Chardonnay grown in one of the higher spots where the nights are colder and the days fresher with good airflow helping keep the wines healthy. The grapes are harvested by hand early in the morning and fermented in stainless steel.

With a lovely stone fruit character and balancing acid it is wonderful to drink with pasta, some chicken in lemon or a salads.
