White wine
Contreras Ruiz, Viña Barredero, Condado de Huelva, Spain
This wine is made from Zalema, a grape native to Andalucia (and also very useful when compiling an a-z of grape varieties), grown on vineyards in the deep south of Spain, next to the Doñana national park and close to the Atlantic ocean and border with Portugal. The soils are calcareous and rich in saline content. The wine is rich gold and green in colour, bright and zippy on the palate with citrus orange flavours and a delicious saline edge. Perfect with fresh fish, a dish of anchovies or salted almonds and stands up to a bit of spice.

Produttori di Manduria, Alice, IGT, Puglia, Italy
Produttori di Manduria is a cooperative winery founded in 1932 but while it is historic it also very forward thinking, a shining light of how coops can be run for the benefit of everyone - its members, its customers and in this case the planet, farming beyond organic and using sustainable processes throughout the vineyards and winery.
‘Alice’ is a mineral, dry white with a lovely savoury almost saline finish made from local variety Verdeca (no relation to Spain's Verdejo). Perfect for a summer's day or with some grilled, oily fish at any time of year!

La Guardiense, Calvese, Falanghina del Sannio DOP
This mixed-farming cooperative was set up over 60 years ago by 33 far sighted farmers in the hills of inland Campania, south of Naples. Today it has over 1,000 members, most of whom only have tiny plots of land.
You know how we love a great co-operative. It’s often in these hidden gems that the local varietals are found and where they get a chance to shine. La Guardiense is innovative and exacting and makes wines that truly express the unique climate and soils of Campania.
We love the Falanghina grape for its subtle hints of orange flower water, crystallised peel and minerality as well as a depth and richness that lingers. Perfect with pasta or with some of Campania’s other great product, Buffalo Mozzarella!

Red wine
Tinto de Rulo, Pipeño, Yumbel, Bío Bío Valley, Chile
It’s easy to think that all Chilean wine production is the traditional French / International grape varieties; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc etc. But it was not ever so. Producers like Tinto de Rulo, a project created by three friends, are rediscovering the traditional varieties of Chile and regenerating ancient plots of vineyard in the process. Pipeño is made from Pais from 70+ year old vines growing in Yumbel, 500km south of Santiago. 50% of the juice is fermented in big lagares of old Raulí wood (Chilean oak), and 50% in amphoras. Pale in colour but full in flavour it is perfect with rillettes, grilled sausages or a cheesy, mushroomy quiche.

Castro Ventosa, El Castro de Valtuille, Mencia Joven, Bierzo, Spain
The best grape you may never had heard of, Mencia is native to north west Spain. It is sometimes compared to Pinot Noir and like Pinot it sometimes gets the oak and ageing treatment but we like it like this, fresh, young and full of fruit. Bold enough to go with food but juicy enough to drink on its own too, maybe a little chilled, it’s great with lamb or duck.
Castro Ventosa has been run by the Perez family since 1752 and the cellar is now run by Raul Perez’s nephew Cesar Marquez, a rising star in Spain.

Judith Beck, Beck Ink, Burgenland, Austria
Who the heck is Judith Beck? Icon enough to be name checked in a rap. (Emidio Pepe by Slim Papi if you’re interested!)
There are quite a lot of women winemakers who set the bar very high for everyone and Judith Beck in Austria is definitely one of them. Her wines always delight with their balance, elegance and drinkability. As she says, they go for complexity over opulence, enjoyableness over power. Located in Burgenland in eastern Austria the climate is strongly continental but the vineyards are particularly influenced by the Neusiedlersee, a huge lake that tempers the climate and stores warmth from the long summer sunlight hours.
This wine is a blend of two local varieties and is surprisingly full bodied but with a lightness and minerality, full of summer berry flavours and a touch of spice. Brilliant value, as are all Judith's wines.
