White wines -
Cantina Di Venosa, Basilicata Bianco Vignali, Basilicata, Italy - We love indigenous grapes and we love wines from volcanic soils - they seem to have a verve and life that’s a bit special. In this case the grapes are Greco and Malvasia and the volcanic soils in Basilicata in the south of Italy, a slightly forgotten land of mountains, fields and beautiful landscapes. Cantina Venosa is a cooperative winery with around 400 members who between them own around 800 hectares, from which they produce a range of wines including whites and the flagship Aglianico del Vulture. This wine is one of the classic range which express the typical regional style. White peach, melon, orange blossom. Pair with shrimps or asparagus risotto and drink young but not too heavily chilled.

Country - Italy
Region - Basilicata
Variety / Blend - Greco, Malvasia, Chardonnay

Arndorfer, 'Handcrafted' Gruner Veltliner, Kamptal, Austria - Martin and Anna Arndorfer have a natural, biodynamic approach to growing grapes and making wine and believe in minimal interference. They sum it up perfectly, 'our wines are the best representatives of what, who, and where we are' ... 'we have made it our task to produce wines that unite origin and passion, wines that arouse curiosity.'
This Gruner Veltliner is sure to do that! Light, spicy and herbal with a dry finish. Grown in the valley of the river Kamp, a tributary of the Danube, it’s a wine from the hills with balance and verve.

Ai Galera, Poetico Vihno Regional, Tejo, Portugal - The previously undervalued Tejo region, lying to the south of Lisbon, is capable of producing wines of enormous value and character – something that is captured by Ai Galera. From around the region of Charneca on sandy-clay soils. Each variety is fermented separately in temperature controlled stainless steel vats at 23 ºC. An intense ruby red colour. Vinous and clean aroma's with hints of red berry fruits. Round in the mouth and medium bodied. A well rounded finish with mellow tannin.

This gentle red works well with white meats and soft cheese.

Luis Canas, Crianza, Rioja, Spain - Incredibly in the 1970’s it was extremely unusual for winemakers in Rioja Alavesa, a cooler, damper subregion of the Rioja area, up by the Sierra Cantabria, to bottle wines themselves rather than sell in bulk to other producers or merchants. Luis Canas was one of the first to do so and used to distribute himself too, heading up to Bilbao to sell direct to bars and restaurants. This innovative spirit has continued and the bodega is now recognised as one of Rioja’s premium producers. Luis Canas senior himself is now in his eighties but still rocks up for a glass and a few olives every lunchtime while his son, Juan Luis, focuses on producing fantastic quality fruit and not whacking it with excess oak ageing. Expect plum, cherry, a touch of liquorice, lovely soft tannin and subtle oak aromas. Fantastic with traditional Spanish cured meats, a paella or roasted meat or poultry.
